Course objectives
The aim of the course is to make students acquainted with the basics of the portuguese lexicology and semantics as well as with the actual problems of lexicography. The students are supposed to prepare and present a topic in the area of one of these linguistic brach. This will be appointed by the lecturer. In the more practical part of the course the students will be led to develop their knowledge about the meaning and formation of lexemes by practical exercises and last but not least to enlarge their vocabulary.
Syllabus
  • lexicology, lexicography, lexicon and its structure
  • word, lexeme, colocation
  • historical perspective of portuguese lexicon: archaism, neologism
  • words taken over from foreign languagues
  • meaning of lexical units
  • relations semantical-paradigmatical and semantical-syntagmatical
  • word formation: derivation and composition
  • negation prefixes
  • types of vocabulary (slang words, dialectal) etc.
  • semantics, semiology.

Teaching methods
Lecture: exposition and definitions of basic terms and their exemplification on different types of specific text. Seminar: application and extension of theoretical knowledge on prepared presentations (in pairs) of a topic in the area appointed by the lecturer. Thematically relevant excercises will complete the class. The students are required to prepare themselves at home for this.
Assessment methods
Credit is obtained for successful preparation and presentation of the contribution. Examination: final test (success rate 75 %).
