Course objectives
The students will be acquainted with the basic terms in the field of translation and translation studies and with a brief outline of the development of approaches to translation. We will also focus in the the importance of competence in the target (Czech) language. The course is predominantly practical: it is designed to help students speed up the process of developing translation skills. The core of the course consists of the translation of various types of texts from Slovenian to Czech language and the discussion of different translation procedures and techniques.
Syllabus
  • Every class has this structure:
  • 1. a brief presentation of selected translation problem, basic terms in the field of translation and translation studies,
  • 2. team work on a Slovenian text,
  • 3. reading of the translated text with comments.
  • Translation: specialistic texts (various branches - linguistics, literary scholarship, history, sociology, geography), business texts (contracts, instruction manuals), journalistic texts (articles), literary texts (poems, short stories).

Teaching methods

Assessment methods
Credit requirements: regular attendance, participation in class discussions, regular preparation for classes, final translation with comments (min. 6000 signs).
