- Course objectives
- Cíle předmětu anglicky At the end of this course the students will be able to: • be knowledgeable in issues of Christianity symbology; • work with primary and secondary literature sources of interest’s area; • interpret artistic (esp. literary) works from the Middle Ages and baroque on the basis of contemporary aesthetic principles; • interdisciplinary connect knowledge from literary area to iconography area; • apply the achieved knowledge and skills in order to write scholarly texts on related topics. In course students get acquainted with rules of using symbology in contemporary literary production of the Middle Ages, humanism and baroque. Theory of symbol will be looked from various viewpoints and applied on the framework of Christianity literature. Knowledge will be illustrated and analysed on chosen texts of genre’s spectrum.

- Osnova anglicky • Definition of the basic scholarly terminology – symbol from various viewpoints (etymological, historical and modern). Differentiation of symbol from metaphor, metonym, allegory and emblem. • Symbol in conception of Jan Lehár and issues of symbols and emblems by Bohuslav Balbín. • Specific attributes of symbols in comparison with sign and conceptual express. • Symbolic code, decode of information and purpose of symbol’s origin. • Classification of symbology (preachering work of J. A. Komenský). • Detailed charting of six dominant symbolic domain. • Symbology in context with ancient times (ancient philosophy). • Christianity symbology with context of the Old Czech literature. • Aesthetic principles of medieval and baroque art (literature, iconography). • Medieval harmonical principle vs. baroque dialectical principle of artistic works. • Personalities/works in individual epochs of the Old Czech literature through genres (The Life of Saint Catherine, Komenský, Michna from Otradovice, Bridel and others).
