- Course objectives
- The main aim of the seminar is to make students acquainted with the mechanisms how the mass media operate and how the museum’s curators should collaborate with them to force their activities (e.g. exhibitions project) through. And also to prepare them to be collaborates of the mass media.
- Syllabus
- The main topics:
- 1. introduction into problems
- 2. mass media and the society – the role of mass media in the society (transmission x ritual model); two kinds of the market (readers x advertiser)
- 3. Situation of the Czech mass media; globalization of the mass media’s market; the situation of the cultural departments of the Czech newspapers Task: 7. 3. begins in the Moravian gallery the exhibition “Contemporary art from Taiwan” – write the news 1500 letters
- 4. the news values; the construction of the news
- Task: watch the art news in newspapers during 1 week
- 5. editorial competencies; gate keeping; journalistic sources;
- 6. the problem of objectivity and responsibility of journalists
- 7. public relations – definition, function, instruments and methods
- Task: prepare the press release introducing the permanent exhibition of the old masters in Moravian gallery in Brno
- 8. public relations – guest Simona Juráčková from Moravian Gallery in Brno, or Silvie Marková from PR agency smART
- 9. types of materials; special characteristics of the diverse genres and pitfalls during their preparation
- Task: to write a review
- 10. electronically mass media - special characteristics of the job in the radio, TV, possibilities of internet
- 11. guest – point of view of an active journalist - probably Jan Vitvar from the weekly “Respekt”
- 12. case study Art&Antiques – conceptions of an art magazine and problems with their realization
