Course objectives
Course objectives: The main objective of the course is to present basic knowledge of and necessary orientation in the field of solution of detrimental (socially pathological) phenomena. The course presents basics in legal theory, constitutional law, criminal law, civic law, family law, and other codes of law related to the topic. The aim is to teach students to work independently with legal norms and be able to apply them accurately in everyday practice. Students will collectively analyze typical and atypical manifestations of delinquent behavior on concrete examples, such as: youth criminality, children’s delinquency, drug addiction, pathological gambling, etc. As a part of the course, students will be introduced in the process of prosecution.

  • Course outline I. Introduction a) Introduction to law and importance of law in the society b) Czech legal code structure c) Selected chapters from Czech Charter of Rights and the Constitution d) Public and private law and their basic characteristics II. Basics of Criminal Law a) Basic principles of Criminal law b) Structure of the Penal code c) Basic terminology – a criminal offense, misdemeanor, misdeed, and delict, d) Basics of criminal liability, e) Types of punishment and their alternatives, f) Facts of a legal offense and misdemeanor, g) Analysis of selected constituents, h) Basics of criminal code and application of the processes by Czech prosecution institutions. III. Criminal Liability of Youths a) Youth judicature – (law 218/2003) b) Conditions of youth criminal liability c) Subject matter of misdeeds d) Types of educational precautions e) Participants of a legal process and the role of a curator f) Contemporary issues of law enforcement IV. Collaboration with prosecution institutions and other subjects a) The role of an educational advisor at schools b) Main roles of the social-legal protection of children authority c) Basic competence of the Czech Police d) The role of a state’s prosecutor e) Contemporary programs of prevention

Assessment methods
Course type: lectures supplemented with seminars Course evaluation: credit In order to get the credit, students must write a seminar thesis (5-10 pages) on an assigned topic. The topic of the thesis will be assigned at the beginning of the course and a deadline for the thesis is one week before the last meeting. A maximum of two students may share a topic.
