Course objectives
The main purpose of the course is to bring to the students a deeper theoretical understanding and practical mastery of the Italian syntax. The course is a continuation of the Normative Grammar of Italian, dedicated mainly to the Italian morphology. The course focuses above all on the chapters concerning the basic constituents of the sentence, the use of verbal tenses and modes etc. The studied phenomena are illustrated by original texts.
Syllabus
  • Familiarization with the necessary terminology. Syntagm. Types of sentences: possible criteria for their classification. The constituents of a sentence. Complex and compound sentences. The types of subordinate clauses. The functional sentence perspective. The Italian word order compared to Czech. Specific features of the Italian syntax and the problems of translation.

Teaching methods
Lecture: exposition and definitions of basic terms and their exemplification on different types of specific text (recordings), proceeding from diverse registers. Seminar: application of theoretical knowledge on authentic texts (recordings). During their presentations students show their ability to interconnect on their own their theoretical knowledge and practical analysis of a specific text.
Assessment methods
Written test. Credit: active participation and attendance is required as well as written test, where students show their ability to analyze and explain phenomena in accordance (or in conflict) with the standard.
