- Course objectives
- The lectures about Art Nouveau are set out according to artistic tasks with the goal to reflect the function of visual creation within the culture of fin-de-siecle. During the course, learners will become acquainted with key works of Art Nouveau, including their cultural historic aspects. A special attention will be devoted to the problem of a new status of arts corresponding to the demands of a modern life style.

- 1. Art Nouveau: specification of the term and actual dimensions of its study
- 2. Periodization and main centers of Art Nouveau visual culture
- 3. Center and province: Artistic exchange
- 4. Arts and Crafts Movement and a new status of applied arts
- 5. Artist, viewer, critic: exhibitions and market
- 6. To reveal the mystery of the soul: Genre, Allegory, Symbol
- 7. Posters, books and magazines
- 8. Residential and civic buildings
- 9. Churches, chapels, monuments and tombstones
- 10. Excursion Art Nouveau in Brno
- 11. Colors, tones, sounds: between fine arts, music and literature Presentation of papers
- 12. Presentation of papers.
- Summary Biographies of the below mentioned artists will be also included in lectures: Aubrey Beardsley, František Bílek, Ferdinand Khnopff, Odilon Redon, Stanisław Wyspiański, Antoni Gaudí, Dušan Jurkovič, Jan Kotěra, Emil Králík a Otto Wagner.

- Assessment methods
- A basic orientation in the questions of the art nouveau visual culture is to be proved through a colloqium. It is necessary to elaborate an essay on an agreed theme - according to the own choices by students or recommended (min. 5.500 signs incl. spaces). Deadline: 12.5.2014. Themes of essays are to be consulted with a lecturer or pursuited to a folder at the IS till 2.4.2014.
