Course objectives
The course is focused on film adaptations of literary works, thus the subject are relationships between literature and film. During the open lectures students will familiarize with contemporary theories of film adaptation and formal methods of its research (narrative in film and literature, adaptation as intermedial transposition, authorship, intertextuality). Definition of adaptation as a cultural dialogue (process of creations etc.) will be emaphasised besides poetological analysis. The other part of the course will be based on interpretation of selected film adaptations, whereas shifts of meaning and form will be traced. Reading of literary works and texts focused on the phenomenon is essential to successfull accomplishment of the course. After finishing the course student will be familiar with wide range of theoretical approach to adaptation research: - thus will be able to criticise adaptations other ways than from aspect of fidelity to the literary artwork, - will be familiar with wide range of interpretation methods of adaptation research, - will understand film adaptations in wider cultural context.
