Course objectives
The aim of the course is to give students a detailed insight into problems of staging Roman comedy (palliate) for contemporary audience. Students will take part in several reruns of a concrete play by Plautus, the as-yet-untranslated “Curculio”, that has been rehearsed in the previous course. Acting the play repeatedly in front of different audience will help the students to realise the specificity of Plautus' humour and explore the ways of its accomodation for a modern spectator.
Learning outcomes
The student having passed the course will be able:
- to explain the specificity and staging conventions of the Roman comedy (palliate) in detail;
- to characterize Plautus' humour and its effect on nowadays spectator;
- to describe various strategies of how to adapt the Roman comedy for contemporary audience.
