Course objectives
The aim of the course is to examine knowledge of basic Latin grammar. The course is intended for Ph.D. students of Slavic languages.
Learning outcomes
A student should be able to:
grammatically describe verbal and nominal forms and create them;
translate short sentences into Czech;
identify basic types of Latin subordinate clauses.
Syllabus
  • 1st declension nouns, basic prepositions.
  • 1st conjugation (present, imperfect and future indicative, imperative, present infinitive); translation of passive forms, expression of agent.
  • 2nd declension nouns, 1st and 2nd declension adjectives.
  • Verb esse, compounds of the verb esse. Adverbs derived from the 1st and 2nd declension adjectives.
  • 2nd conjugation (present, imperfect and future indicative, imperative, present infinitive).
  • 3rd declension nouns.
  • 3rd and 4th conjugation, mixed conjugation (type capio) - present, imperfect and future indicative, imperative, present infinitive.
  • Deponent verbs.
  • 3rd declension adjectives, present participle and its use.
  • Adverbs of 3rd declension adjectives, personal pronouns, possessive pronouns, demonstrative pronouns is, idem, possessive genitive and dative.
  • Double accusative construction, accusative with infinitive.
  • 4th and 5th declension, demonstrative pronouns.
  • Interrogative and relative pronouns, relative clauses; negative pronouns; pronominal adjectives.
  • Comparison of adjectives and adverbs.
  • Present subjunctive (1st-4th conjugation and esse).
  • Imperfect subjunctive (1st-4th conjugation and esse).
  • Use of the present and imperfect subjunctive in selected types of subordinate clauses (ut / ne clauses, cum historicum, conditional clauses).
  • Cardinal and ordinal numerals.
  • Perfect stem, perfect active indicative.
  • Perfect passive participle, perfect passive indicative.
  • Participium coniunctum, ablative absolute.
  • Plusquamperfect and future perfect indicative and its use in subordinate clauses.
  • Future participle and supine; perfect and future infinitives; nominative with infinitive.
  • Perfect and plusquamperct subjunctive.
  • Indirect questions, use of subjuntive, sequence of tenses.
  • Gerundive and gerund.
  • Verbs velle, nolle, malle, ire, ferre, fieri (passive knowledge).
