Course objectives
The seminar will introduce the students to the film journalism of the Protectorate era, will teach them how to analyse historical texts, how to identify research topics in a "bottom-up" way, and to fill in an online database indexing articles in the leading industry paper of that time, Filmový kurýr.
Learning outcomes
Students will be able to analyse historical reviews and essays on cinema, to define research topics by researching published sources. They will be familiar with the conditions of journalism in the Protectorate era, and well informed on the film industry. They will get an experience with a collaboration on a project - in our case, an annotated bibliography of the leading industry journal Filmový kurýr.
Syllabus
  • The students will be researching on changes of the film industry from the First Republic, through so called Second Republic, till the end of the Protectorate Bohemia and Moravia. The main research material will be a spectrum of film journals (Filmovy kuryr, Kinorevue, Vestnik CMFU, etc.). This perspective makes it possible to research: the changes of the film industry through the perspective of its representatives and professinal organizations; 2. the basic features of the public discourse on cinema and its changes caused by political and cultural situation.
