Course objectives
The aim of the seminar is to get acquainted with the fundamental means of expression of journalism and art criticism and to actively master them. During the course the students analyze examples of both domestic and foreign historical and contemporary art-critical texts. They look at the used expression forms, the journalistic style, the very subject of interest and the content of the communication in the context of the period paradigms of the society in which the text was created. The current media art scene is being systematically analyzed in the course, students are led to deepen the ability of their own critical judgment on art works, exhibitions, publications, and institutional activities.

In the first part of the course students are guided and motivated to find historical critical texts related to exhibitions in our environment, to work with sources. They are acquainted with key art periodicals of the past in our environment (Moderní revue, Umělecký měsíčník, Volné směry, Výtvarná práce, Výtvarné umění, Umění, Umění a řemesla, etc.). It is then followed by an analysis of critical texts from abroad.
Throughout the semester they also work on their own art-critical output.
