- Course objectives
- The doctoral exam tests both the theoretical awareness of the students and their knowledge of the literature in question.

- Syllabus
- The doctoral exam consists of three thematic areas. Upon agreement with the supervisor and chair of the examining committee, the candidate will study:
- a) one topic from a specified traditional area (writing, criticism, literary periods, literary movements, genres)
- b) one topic relating to the basic methodological approaches (ethnic, gender, queer, postcolonial, regionalist etc.)
- c) one topic from a selected major cultural area (British and Irish Literature and Culture, North American Literature and Culture, Australian and New Zealand Literature and Culture, Literature and Culture of other Anglophone Countries).
- The purpose of the exam is to verify that the applicants have adequate overall knowledge of the field in question and have the requisite theoretical awareness.
- The members of the committee test the ability of critical reflection and application of acquired knowledge and professional approaches, both in regard to the examinee's own research and in a wider cultural context.
- Literature
- Due to the specific nature of the subject no mandatory reading is required.
- Teaching methods
- Oral exam based on a set of three questions. Each response starts with an opening statement by the student, followed by a discussion of the student with the committee members in each question.
- Assessment methods
- The committee decides on the student's passing or failing in a secret vote. The grade is subsequently agreed upon in a debate of the committee.
