Course objectives
Continuation of normative grammar of the Attic dialect of Ancient Greek. The aim of the course is to present a general survey of Ancient Greek verbal morphology and summarize the basics of syntax so that the student is able to be familiar with grammar and vocabulary in any original text of the classical and later periods. Another aim is to give a comprehensive overview of the development of the Greek language, illustrated on examples of texts from various periods.
Learning outcomes
At the end of this course, students will:
- have a comprehensive overview of both nominal and verbal morphology;
- have a basic overview of the syntax: infinitive and participal constructions, realization of dependent clauses;
- understand the meaning of verbal moods (conjunctive, optativ);
- understand the development of the Greek language from Mycenaean to the present;
- be able to read the original Greek text with dictionary and other tools.

  • 2. Formation of aorist in liquid stems.
  • 3. Second aorist in -ην.
  • 4. Perfect stem, reduplication.
  • 5. μι verbs.
  • 6. Syntax of the complex sentence.
  • 7. Development of Greek.

Teaching methods
Planned learning activities and teaching methods consist of lectures, grammar exercises and reading of continuous Greek texts of diffrent authors and diffrent periods. Students are required to translate and gramatically analyze particular chapters in advance at home with the use of vocabulary. During the classes, the text is translated and the grammar is explained.
Assessment methods
Credits are awarded for the successful passing of the written test consisting of a translation of the passage from an unknown text with the help of the dictionary.
