Course objectives
Aim of this course is to introduce students to dialectology as a specialized linguistic discipline, with focus of its interest, its methods, means of work with result and publication process (a linguistic atlas). Students will be presented with history of dialectology and with the so-called linguistic geography. First half of the lectures will be finished with a brief overview of Czech dialects. Second part, on the other hand, will be devoted to situation of Slovene, Serbo-Croatian, Macedonian and Bulgarian language. Students will be presented with structure and most important identification features of independent dialects of the above stated South Slavic languages, as well as with the issues of formation of Croatian, Bosnian, Serbian and Montenegrin standard language based on New Štokavian dialects of Eastern Hercegovina, and with issues of Bulgarian and Macedonian language area.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students will be able to demonstrate the knowledge of dialectology, have a broader and more solid understanding of key aspects of linguistics and comparative study of Slavonic languages, be familiar with Slavonic grammar, and will be able to contrast and compare Czech and other Slavonic languages.

  • Serbo-Croatian language area. Principles of territorial division of Serbo-Croatian dialects and their basic characteristic.
  • Bulgarian language area. Principles of territorial division of Bulgarian dialects and their basic characteristic.
  • Macedonian language area. Principles of territorial division of Macedonian dialects and their basic characteristic.
