Course objectives
After completion of the course, the student will have knowledge of Ukrainian literature of the second half of the 19th century. Emphasis is placed on reading literary works of this period. The student will be able to include writers and their works into periods and individual artistic directions.
Learning outcomes
The student will become acquainted with the history and development trends of the Ukrainian literature of the second half of the 19th century.
Syllabus
  • 1. Development of Ukrainian critical realism (Ivan Nechuy-Levytsky, Panas Myrny). 2. The beginnings of the modern Ukrainian theater (Ivan Kotliarevsky, Mykola Kostomarov). 3. New realistic drama (Ivan Karpenko-Kary, Marko Kropyvnytskiy, Mikhail Starycky). 4. Political and cultural situation in Ukraine in the last third of the 19th century. The Tsar's decree of 1876 and its consequences, the transfer of literary life to Galicia. 5. The poetry of Ivan Franko (evolution, genres, motives, poetics). 6. Poetry, prose and drama in Ivan Franko's literary work. 7. "The Pokuttian Trinity". Vasyl Stefanyk and the beginnings of Ukrainian expressionism. 8. Satirical literature of Les Martovych and lyrical prose of Marko Cheremshyna. 9. Literary work of Olha Kobylianska and the beginnings of Ukrainian symbolism. 10. Mykhailo Kotsiubynsky as the first Ukrainian impressionist. 11. Poetry of Lesia Ukrainka (motives, genres, poetics). 12. Development of Ukrainian modernism. 8. Satirická tvorba Lese Martovyče a lyrizující próza Marka Čeremšyny.
  • 9. Tvorba Olhy Kobyljanské a počátky ukrajinského symbolismu.
  • 10. Mychajlo Kocjubynskyj jako první ukrajinský impresionista.
  • 11. Poezie Lesji Ukrajinky (motivy, žánry, poetika). Dramatické poemy.
  • 12. Zrod a vývoj ukrajinského modernismu.
