The course is intended for those students who know Russian at minimum B2 level that’s why it’s not recommended to the first-year bachelor students.

Course objectives
The aim of the course is to provide general overview of linguoculturological movements and to familiarize with basic linguarealia and concepts typical for the Russian culture. The course is focused on the connection of cultural and historical phenomena with their reflection in the language and on the correct interpretation and semantization of language units based on the knowledge of Russian culture.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course, the student will be able:
- to distinguish and to use basic linguoculturological terms;
- to describe linguoculturological methods;
- to have an overview about Russian basic concepts;
- to interpret and to explain the meaning of the particular precedential expressions and statements;
- to connect cultural and historical phenomena with their reflection in the language.
Syllabus
  • 1. The language picture of the world. Linguoculturology. Mentality.
  • 2. The Russian language sphere of concepts. Concepts.
  • 3. Component analysis of meanings.
  • 4. Two kinds of Russian culture: people’s, unofficial and official, book; double naming in Russian (glaza—oči, gorod—grad, istina—pravda, styd— sram atd.). “Practical idealism”.
  • 5. Significant words for Russian culture (zaodno, ujut, vratʼ, guljatʼ, duša, žalostʼ atd.).
  • 6. Expressing of national culturological specifics at different language levels (morphemics, word-forming, morphology, syntax).
  • 7. Linguirealia (precedential statements and expressions from Russian literature and films, the Soviet cliché).
  • 8. Euphemisms and their classification. Typical Russian euphemisms.
  • 9. Active processes in modern Russian language from linguoculturological spesifics point of view.
  • 10. The competition of “Word of the Year” and “Slovar’ peremen” as the reflection of the modern world.
  • 11. General vocabulary of Russian and the way linguists work with it.
  • 12. Summary.

Assessment methods
During the course students will prepare the paper. The credit is given on the basis of the paper and the final test.
