Cíle předmětu
Course Description: Why does Taiwan matter? What makes Taiwanese politics both unique yet critically important for the world today? What makes Taiwan’s dynamic democracy run, and what are the most pressing issues facing Taiwan today? While the possibility of a world conflict over Taiwan looms large, there is so much more to Taiwan than just geopolitical risk. Taiwan’s politics are intricate, multifaceted, and fascinating. Whether you are brand new to Taiwan or have lived in Taiwan for years, this class will be your first step into becoming an expert on Taiwan politics. The goal of this class is to make you fluent in the who, what, when, where, and why of Taiwan politics. This class is focused on contemporary politics, meaning that this will not be a deep-dive into Taiwanese history or development. Instead, we will fast-forward into focusing on today’s world and understanding how Taiwan’s democracy works today. This course has two halves: the first half is focused on learning about the every-day mechanics of Taiwanese politics. We will learn about Taiwanese democracy, how Taiwan’s democratic system works, Taiwan’s contentious relationship with China, and how Taiwan navigates its position in the world today. The second half of this class is focused on what matters most in Taiwan’s contemporary political climate today. Each week will focus on a new political issue, most of which will involve an invited speaker to present their expertise on the subject.
Výstupy z učení
Course Expectations: Each class will be broken up into two parts: lecture and discussion. I will begin each class with a lecture on that week’s readings and topic. Afterwards, we will engage in a group discussion or small group discussion covering that week’s topic. It is my role to guide and facilitate class discussions. That means I expect you to participate actively and respectfully. Active participation means contributing in a way that demonstrates a knowledge of the readings and critically engaging with other classmates’ comments. Respectful participation means being mindful and thoughtful to your classmates. We have the opportunity to learn from scholars from around the world whose perspectives, experiences, and politics will be different from our own. I expect you all to treat your classmates with the utmost respect even during moments of disagreement.

Výukové metody
Requirements: Each class will require a set of readings on that day’s topic. Readings have been carefully selective to be as interesting and meaningful as possible. You have to read. Readings along with all assignments are mandatory. The purpose of readings is to help familiarize yourself with the scholarly literature, and also get you used to consuming research on a regular basis. Student must come to class each day with a 1-page reflection based on that day’s readings. These summaries should identify the research questions, the hypotheses, the methods used, and the results. The purpose of daily writings is to get us thinking critically about how research is conducted and our ability to neatly summarize it. Students must also include at least 2 discussion questions they have based on the day’s readings. The reflection must be printed turned in at the beginning of class to receive credit.
Metody hodnocení
Grading: There are two main grades in this class: 1) Participation 50% This includes daily reflections and questions. Reflections are not a substitution for participation. If you do not participate, you will not pass this class. Please also be mindful that participation is also about quality, not just quantity. 2) Final Exam 50% You will receive an essay prompt due at the end of the week. More details will come later in the semester. Academic integrity: In line with university guidelines, plagiarism and cheating are forbidden. I will check essays and writings for plagiarism. Cheating will be reported to the highest authority. I do not tolerate it. ChatGPT Policy: Programs like ChatGPT and similar types of AI assisted tools are great resources to ensure your writing is grammatically correct and cohesive, especially for non-native English speakers. It is ABSOLUTELY NOT a substitute for creating ideas and writing your essays. I will use online software detection to see if you are using ChatGPT to write your papers. If I suspect you are using the software, I will either require you to re-do the assignment or fail you.
