Course objectives
Students will understand the historical development of the Greeks during the period of the Ottoman rule, that is from 1453 until the end of the 18th Century. They will be capable of working with scholarly historical litterature and of applying the acquired knowledge while interpreting Modern Greek litterature.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course the student will be able to: - identify and understand the main periods of the history of the Greeks under the Ottoman rule - to know important political, ecclesiastical and cultural representatives of this period of the Greek history - to understand contemporary situation of Greek state and Republic of Cyprus as results of previous historical developments - to assess the place of Greek history within the frame of European history of the early Modern Age - to understand the works of the modern Greek litterature within their true historical context

  • 1. Introduction - characteristic of the period, Greeks a Ottoman Turks before 1453 2. Administrative structure of the Ottoman Empire 3. Wars on Greek territory until 1669, period of Ottoman expansion 4. Greek diaspora abroad in 15th and 17th centuries 5. New position and structure of constantinopolitan orthodox patriarchate 6. Other structures of Greek orthodox church and its role in preserving the Greek identity during Ottoman rule 7. Wars on Greek territory from 1669 until the end of the 18th Century, political, military and economical decline of the Ottomans 8. Development of Greek nation in 18th century, birth of new Greek elites; phanariots, landowners, merchants, educated members of Greek diaspora abroad 9. Decline of the Ottomans and its influence on formation of Greek elites, second phase of the development of Greek diaspora 10. Greek insurrection of 1770 (orlofika) 11. Influence of modern ideas and thoughts from western Europe (Enlightenment, liberalism) and crucial world events (French revolution) on traditional form of Greek identity, birth of modern Greek nationalism, filhellenic movement 12. Military operations of Greek territory during Napoleonic wars
