Course objectives
The course introduces Christianity as a lived religion and traces the historical development of selected aspects of its cult from its beginnings to the present. It focuses on key topics of Christian practice, such as visuality and depiction of the sacred, music and sound in the sacred space, the development and social significance of Christian architecture, oral and written culture, theological and ritual significance of the human senses, the role of women, historical development of the Eucharist and the Mass, different forms of Christian initiation (baptism, confirmation, making monastic vows) and the Christian cult of saints and relics.
Learning outcomes
After completing the course, students will be able to:
  • describe the forms of major Christian rituals and the main lines in their historical development;
  • understand Christianity as a lived religion and identify key topics of Christian praxis and everyday life
  • interpret the meaning of major Christian rituals from an anthropological perspective and/or cultural-historical perspective;
  • prepare and perform a presentation of a particular topic concerning Christian rituals;
  • discuss the presentation.
