Prerequisites

- Upon entry, students are expected to have a solid proficiency level of CEFR A2.2 (or a solid HSK 3).
- The course is offered EXCLUSIVELY to the students of the Chinese Department of Masaryk University.
- Exceptions could be made ONLY IF an Erasmus student has Chinese Studies as their major at their home university and if the student can present documented proof. Language proficiency certificates (HSK/TOCFL) are NOT accepted.

Course objectives

Students have already covered the HSK4 content in Chinese VI , so in this course, the teaching assistant will not teach HSK4 material but will assist students in extensive conversation practice and discussion skills based on HSK4.
The goal of the course is to help students become familiar with Chinese conversation based on HSK4. It is highly recommended for students to enroll.

Learning outcomes

At the end of the course, students should be able to:
- understand the main points of speech on familiar matters regularly encountered at work, school, leisure, etc.;
- understand texts that consist mainly of high frequency words or job-related language;
- deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken;
- enter a conversation on topics that are familiar, of personal interest or pertinent to everyday life (e.g. family, hobbies, work, travel and current events);
- present clear and detailed descriptions on a wide range of subjects related to his/her own field of interest;
- explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.

Syllabus

The course Drill VI is taught following the syllabus of Chinese VI.

Teaching methods

The teaching assistants will help students engage in extensive conversations to familiarize them with new vocabulary and grammar.
For every two lessons, students are required to give a presentation related to the theme of the assigned text. Please follow these guidelines:
1. Focus on one specific topic or argument and explore it in depth.
2. Prepare slides for your presentation. The visual design is not the priority, but the content must be presented in Chinese. You must upload your slides to IS at least one week before your presentation so the TA can review them.
3. Your presentation should last about five minutes and be delivered using your slides. You may include video clips if they help your audience better understand your topic, but avoid relying too much on videos, as this reduces your opportunity to practice presenting in Chinese.
4. After the presentation, each audience member is required to ask the presenter one question, and the presenter should respond. Each Q&A should take about one minute.

Assessment methods

1) Attendance (up to 2 unexcused absences are allowed in one semester). In case of 3 or more unexcused absences, the student fails.
2) In order for an absence to be excused, students must notify the teacher in advance or within 24 hours after the class. If there is an official document (e.g., a medical certificate), students should submit a formal request to study Department of the Faculty.
3) The student needs to fulfill all the tasks given by the teacher (assignments, interviews, etc.) Unpreparedness is judged as absence.
4) Students must not switch study groups, unless the teacher explicitly approved.
