Course objectives
Course is aimed at students of biology but it may be useful for junior researchers. Prerequisite of successful research in the plant physiology is a good knowledge of basic methods used in this field. Students in this course will learn principles of several important methods used in analysis of functioning of higher plant.
Syllabus
  • Methods for image processing
  • Image analysis
  • Thin layer chromatography of photosynthetic pigments and preparation of standards
  • Measurement of root respiration by oxymetric method, analysis of respiratory pathways
  • Isolation of leaf chloroplasts, tests of their activity
  • Advanced methods in measurement of plant gas exchange
  • Measurement of hydraulic resistance of xylem and the degree of xylem integration
  • The effects of toxic compounds on the activity of Hill reaction in chloroplasts
  • Effects of quantity and quality of light on the growth of plants in in vitro cultures
  • Measurements of the rate of photosynthetic processes by oxymetry and fluorometry – comparison of methods
  • Ascorbateperoxidase – determination of activity and the amount of protein
  • Detection of stress due to exposure to toxic compounds using fluorometric methods
