Course objectives
At the end of the course students should be able to:
1. recognize relevant types of bedrock;
2. Explain important physical and chemical features of above mentioned bedrocks;
3. Interpret these features in the respect of geomorphological weathering and erosion resistance;
4. Interpret how relevant bedrocks types influence landscapes, theirs georeliefs, soils and biotas;
5. Understand and apply geological maps;
6. Explain basical geological division of the Czech Republic and its nearest surroundings;
7. Know main bedrocks of Landscape regions of the Czech Republic and and explain their impact to their nature and landuse.
Syllabus
  • 1. Introduction, reasons for introducing of this new course Lithogeography. Manifestation of various bedrock types in the landscape. Division of bedrocks relavant in respect of geologists in contrary to that of geographers. Problematics of new bedrocks names.
  • 2. Division of bedrocks on the base of chemical composition
  • 3. Division of bedrocks on the base of geomorphological resistance
  • 4. Division of bedrocks on the base of their weathering and impact to the (micro-)clima.
  • 5. Disponibil geological maps in the Czech Republic and how to understand them. Geological professional institutions in the Czech Republic.
  • 6. Charakteristics of relevant types of bedrock, important from the view of geographers.
  • 7. Geological evolution of the Czech territory and nearest surroundigs
  • 8. Regional geological unites in the Czech Republic and influence of their bedrocks to the landscape (and landuse) character (5 lectures)
  • Aim of Seminars:
  • 1. Recognition of bedrocks (4 x))
  • 2. Visit to the Institute of geological sciences in the Masaryk University (1x))
  • 3. Practise with various geological maps (2x))
  • 4. Terrain exkursion (5 hod.) to the Brno surroundings with presentation of main bedrocks in Brno region. Recognoscation of their influence to the Landscape. (1x)

Teaching methods
The lectures are held with use of powerpoint presentations with many photographs and pictures. About 5 hours takes self-study of electronical information sources. Main types of bedrocks are presented in seminars and students are to learn recognize them. Part of the seminars is dedicated to a terrain exkursion, where active approach is required.
Assessment methods
Oral exam consisting of recognition of 3 types of bedrock, presentation of understanding geological maps and a theoretical part.
Language of instruction
Czech
