- Course objectives
- The student will be able to apply basic physico-chemical concepts to describe environmental processes.
- Syllabus
- 1. Expressions for concentration. Ideal gas law and its applications, partial pressure and number concentration of gas.
- 2. Kinetics of zero, first and pseudo-first order. Half-life and lifetime. Rates of atmospheric chemical and photochemical reactions. Steady-state approximation. Analysis of real data.
- 3. Chemical equilibrium. Solubility product. Henryh's law. Estimation of pH of water in equilibrium with atmospheric gases.
- 4. Compartment and mass balance. Flow rate and flux. Rate constant. Calculation of steady state concentrations.
- 5. Transport of compounds across phase boundaries (water/air). Calculation of lifetime and flux.
- 6. Solubility in water, distribution coefficients. Estimation of Kow. Fractionation of volatile compound between phases. Fugacity.
- 7. Adsorption isotherms. Analysis of real data.
- 8. Radiation bilance of Earth, greenhouse effect.
