The course is intended for postgraduate (MSc) students. Overall knowledge of physical geography and landscape ecology on the undergradute (BSc) level is required to attend the course.

Course objectives
At the end of the course student should be able to understand selected problems of applied research in physical geography. He/she would be able to explain when to apply individual methods in applied research and make reasoned decisions about preconditions that are necessary for proper utilization of methods in question. He/she would be able to make deductions based on acquired knowledge concerning research methods in physical geography. Students will learn, for instance, to propose an Ecological Network of a smaller territory.
Learning outcomes
After finishing the course student should be able to:
- Communicate the recent trends in application of physical geography to practice.
- Apply the selected research methods in the fields of hydrology, hydromorphology, climatology and landscape ecology.
Syllabus
  • 1. FLUVIAL GEOMORPHOLOGY
  • - History of human impact upon rivers, anthropogenic pressure on fluvial systems
  • - Principles and procedures of rivers´ ecological status assessment, methods of hydromorphological monitoring, river restoration, related legislation
  • - Assessment of physical habitat modification of a stream in an urban environment (includes field survey of selected stream in Brno agglomeration and following evaluation)
  • 2. HYDROLOGY AND HYDROGEOGRAPHY
  • - Land management effects on outflow and erosion land surface processes
  • - Legislation and planning in the field of water management and water protection, review of methodologies, geographical work with input data for partial river basin plans
  • - Identification and mapping of flood risk and hazard, flood protection, calculation Q100 (by Čerkašin) and demonstration of flood transformation by water reservoirs
  • 3. LANDSCAPE ECOLOGY
  • - Biogeography and System of Ecological Stability
  • - Planning of Ecological Stability System /USES/
  • - Methodology of USES
  • 4. CLIMATOLOGY
  • - Significance of urban climate studies, key terms, factors controlling urban climate (UC), UC scales and categories, atmosphere boundary layer and canopy layer, radiation and energy balance of urban areas
  • - Air temperature in built-up areas, urban heat island (UHI), UHI types, methods of analysis, UHI intensity estimates, special-purpose and mobile measurements, urban remote sensing, characteristic features of moisture conditions, precipitation and wind field in cities
  • - Urban climate classification, concept of Local Climate Zones, urban climate modelling, mitigation and adaptation strategies in urban climatology

Teaching methods
Lectures, class discussion/debate, projects, professional geography.

Fluvial systems part:
Field survey of a small stream in the territory of Brno is included (calculation of Habitat Modification Score according to the River habitat Survey methodology). Theoretical background is delivered to students in a form of lectures.

Workshop for ecological networks proposals - in map of scale 1:10 000.
Assessment methods
During the course students are to elaborate seminar works, that are evaluated separately. Type of exam - written.
