Course objectives
At the end of the course the students are able to:
Understand and explain developmental processes leading to stem cells population;
Characterize basic features of stem cells;
Explain the role of various cell signaling pathways in maintenance of stem cells;
Interpret and explain recent knowledge and problems in stem cell biology and its applicability in medicine;
Formulate and discuss hypothesis about role of stem cell in tissue regeneration

  • 1. Stem cells, totipotency, pluripotency, multipotency; 2.Self-renewal, proliferation, differentiation, redifferentiation, selection and apoptosis; 3. Embryonic stem cells; 4. Germ cells; 5. Somatic stem cells; 6. Carcinoma stem cells; 7. Neural stem cells; 8. Hematopoietic stem cells; 9. Epidermis and colon stem cells; 10. Mesenchymal and bone marrow stem cells; 11. Stem cells and cell therapy; 12. Stem cells differentiation in vitro; 13. Application of stem cells in toxicology; 14. Therapeutic cloning; 15. Embryonic stem cells and genetically modified organism.
