- Course objectives
- The subject aims to present an overview of existing analog and digital sources that are used in cartography and geoinformatics, including statistical data sources. This overview is presented on three levels: the Czech Republic, Europe (the EU and other countries), and the World. Attention is also paid to data integration in spatial data and information infrastructures and utilization of data, information, and knowledge from existing spatial global-oriented projects.
- Learning outcomes
- The outputs of the course will be the theoretical, methodological, and practical skills of using existing and new map resources, especially concerning key EU projects, namely COPERNICUS (formerly GMES) and its part of INSPIRE. Czech resp. Slovak civil and military map (digital) works such as ZABAGED and Digital Cadastre, new scanner mapping products (e.g., 4G and 5G), military DRMs, and products from the civilian sector are key segments usable for mapping and other models. The ability to understand the implementation GeoInfostrategy of the Czech Republic, including the linking of the spatial component to the Registers (especially RUIAN) and creating a digital map of public administration, will be one of the main integrated outcomes of students and graduates.
- Syllabus
- Overview and structure of resources for Cartography and Geoinformatics. Czech (EGON, Geoinforstrategy) and World (U.N.GGIM, DBAR) context
- Analog sources in cartography: map collections, analog maps, and atlases
- State (public) mapping works, selected products (maps and atlases) from public sector road atlases, tourist maps, etc.
- Digital data sources: data, information, and knowledge on the Internet; Electronic atlases. Open data and free spatial data sources
- The Czech Republic and building digital data sources: civil and military sectors (ZABAGED, DMR, etc.)
- Unified digital maps of the Czech Republic: theoretic presumptions, concept, practical requirements; implementation. Digital cadaster.
- Digital photogrammetry and maps in the Czech Republic
- Europe: digital map sources within the European Union (Eurogeographics, INSPIRE, COPERNICUS)
- Creation, concept, and implementation of the European geographic information infrastructure
- Statistical data sources in the Czech Republic, EU (Eurostat, etc.), and the World (UN, FAO, etc.)
- The World: Global mapping and Global spatial data infrastructure
- The World: Digital planet Earth and Geographic database of the United Nations, DBAR spatial data. Spatial data and maps for disasters and risks reducing
- Data and information in Spatially Enabled Society.
- BIG DATA – concept, analysis, visualization
- The exercise is realized in the form of student presentations on a limited number of areas related to map sources. Not only the level of content of the presentation, but also the way of the scientific presentation itself is evaluated.

- The course ends with an exam (test). The student demonstrates knowledge of basic data sources for cartography and geoinformatics in the Czech Republic, Europe, and the world, both in the civil and private sectors. The student justifies possible procedures and characterizes the preconditions for creating a unified digital map work in the Czech Republic. Demonstrates the ability to work with analog and digital data and information.
Written exam with concise, true, and concise answers to the questions. Attendance at lectures is recommended. A prerequisite for passing the exam is knowledge of data sources mentioned in lectures and in recommended study materials.
Examination in case of standard full-time education:
Final written test or oral exam.
Exam in the case of distance education:
