Course objectives
The main aim of this course is to acquaint students with the chemical and physical laws that allow a qualitative and quantitative description of the fate of chemicals in the environment, including the transport and balance of substances between compartments, and their chemistry in matrices and biomes. The aim of the course is to transfer theoretical knowledge about the behaviour of chemicals in the environment and processes at phase interfaces to the level of practical skills. The course includes laboratory experiments focused on environmental processes, transport and balance of substances between compartments.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course, students should be able to: • understand the transport, distribution and fate of chemicals based on the properties of individual substances and matrices • interpret the laboratory results from the point of view of their fate in the environment • predict the environmental behaviour of the chemicals based on simulation in laboratory conditions • develop laboratory skills and principles of good laboratory practice • design and perform appropriate sample processing for analysis
Syllabus
  • 1. Safety rules in the laboratory 2. RECETOX infrastructure, Trace analytical laboratory, Biobank 3. Good laboratory practice, calibration solutions, chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry 4. Partition coefficient n-octanol/water 5. Determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in an air sample by the GC-MS/MS method 6. Determination of persistent organic pollutants in water by passive sampling 7. Determination of pesticides in soil 8. Determination of flame retardants in dust samples 9. Individual work - extraction of own samples, repetition of acquired skills and knowledge 10. Determination of phthalates in toys 11. Determination of pesticides in vegetables 12. Determination of endocrine disruptor metabolites in urine samples 13. Replacement lecture 14. Final test and final exercise - independent work (extraction and cleaning of the sample)

Teaching methods
Regular weekly practical laboratory course according to the schedule.
Assessment methods
Conditions for obtaining credit: 1. 100 % attendance in all laboratory exercises. 2. Entrance test, safety rules. 3. Laboratory work - each of the tasks is evaluated individually (include interest in the issue, preparation for the task, good laboratory practice, diligence). 4. Laboratory protocols - each protocol is evaluated individually. Each student will prepare a separate protocol for each task. 5. Final test and individual work of one taught exercise.
