Course objectives
Students will become familiar with basic concepts and processes in mineralogy. Students will get basic knowledge of major rock-forming minerals of igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks, their genesis, conditions of formation and their petrogenetic applications.They will also learn about the basic analytical methods in the study of minerals and their chemical composition.
Learning outcomes
Student will after passing the subject: understand the basics of mineral formation and their stability in different PTX conditions; have knowledge of the main rock-forming minerals, their chemical formulas, properties, genesis, their petrogenetic significance and analysis possibilities; be able to identify the main rock-forming minerals according to their physical properties and chemical composition
Syllabus
  • • 1. origin and stability of minerals; genetická mineralogie - část zaměřená na vysvětlení základních pochodů vzniku minerálů v magmatických, metamorfovaných a sedimentárních horninách. • 2. Chemical composition of minerals - description and analysis of minerals chemical composition; analytical methods. • 3. Classification of minerals. Mineral assemblage. • 4. Silicates: Tectosilicates: feldspar group, zeolite group; Phylosilicates: serpentine group, kaolinite, talc, montmorillonite group, micas, chlorite group; Cyclosilicates: beryl, cordierite, tourmaline group; Inosilicates: pyroxene group, amphibole group, wollastonite; Sorosilicates: zoisite and epidote group; nesosilicates: olivine group, garnet group, zircon, Al2SiO5 group, staurolite, titanite; • 5. sulfates: barite, anhydrite, gyps; Carbonates: kalcite group, aragonite group, dolomite group, malachite, azurite; phosphates: monazite, xenotime, apatite group; scheelite, wolframite • 6. Oxides and hydroxides: cuprite, corundum, hematite, ilmenite group, spinel group, rutile, cassiterite, columbite, tantalite, uraninite, goethite, limonite. • 7. Sulphides: chalcocite, galena, sphalerite, chalcopyrite, pyrrhotite, cinnabar, stibnite, pyrite, marcasite, molybdenite, arzenopyrite. • 8. Halides: halite, fluorite • 9. Elements: Au, Ag, Cu, diamond, graphite The main attention is placed on the chemical composition of minerals, mineral analysis, using of minerals in mineralogy and petrology
