Cíle předmětu
These two lectures are designed as an introduction to the active research area of Supramolecular Electrochemistry. Knowledge of electrochemistry or electrochemical techniques is not required.
Osnova
  • Lecture I
  • The first part of this lecture will provide a brief description of the principles of electrochemical techniques, with emphasis on cyclic voltammetry and pulsed voltammetric techniques (normal pulse voltammetry, differential pulse voltammetry and square wave voltammetry).
  • We will discuss the meaning of the quantities measured in voltammetric experiments, such as half-wave potentials, peak potentials and peak currents.
  • We will also address the main differences between reversible and nonreversible electrochemical behavior. The former refers to situations in which the currents are under diffusion control. In this case, the relationship between currents and diffusion coefficients will be highlighted. In contrast, nonreversible behavior refers to those cases in which the currents are at least partially controlled by the kinetics of heterogeneous electron transfer.
  • Lecture II
  • The second lecture will be devoted to applications of electrochemical techniques to supramolecular systems and will make use of extensive examples taken from the literature.
  • We will discuss how supramolecular structures affect redox processes from a thermodynamic basis, which leads to observable changes in peak positions and thus to redox sensing.
  • This will lead naturally to the concept of redox switching, where the relative stabilities of supramolecular structures are affected by oxidation and reduction. In this regard, we will address in some detail the behavior of bi-stable topological molecules, such as rotaxanes, pseudorotaxanes and catenanes. Extensions will include how changes in relative peak heights during cyclic voltammetry can provide information on kinetics and thus the mechanisms of redox switching.
  • We will also catalog the electrochemical behavior of other supramolecular systems, such as inclusion complexes and redox active dendrimers.
  • We will introduce uses of electrochemistry and redox switching for surface-bound and device-based supramolecular and interlocked systems.
