- Course objectives
- Field course in mapping is primarily devoted to practice and apply the knowledge gained within the courses of Geomorphology, Pedogeography and Biogeography which precede the field course.
Main objectives can be summarized as follows: to learn how to do recognoscation of the landscape;
to learn geomorphological and pedological mapping techniques;
to learn fytocenological relevé and analytical or complex vegetational maps elaboration. - Syllabus
- Mapping course contains following working steps:
- 1. Analysis of topographical maps and aerial images of the territory in study. Introducing the mapping area. Compilation of preliminary inventory list of landforms present in the area.
- 2. Visual delimitation of elementary geoforms in the topographic map, compilation of preliminary map of geoforms.
- 3. Validation of delimited geoforms in the field, geomorphological mapping.
- 4. Mapping of soil cover (soil types) in the studied area, excavation and description of soil profile.
- 5. Eleborating of a simple fytocenological relevé.
- Mapping of actual vegetation (biotops) and some plant species distribution of selected territory.
- 6. Compilation of geoecological profile along the slope with outlining biogeographical and pedological findings.
- 7. Compilation of the final draft of the geomorphological map and compilation of final geoecological maps and profiles.
- Detailed programme depends on the locality and the weather.

- Teaching methods
- The lectures will present the Landscape recognoscation and objects, that will be mapped by the students. The students do their own terrain mapping into maps and elaborate notes on the mapped objects and photographic documentation. In the end students elaborate final maps, profiles and final report.
- Assessment methods
- Students submit the final drafts of geoecological maps and profiles attached with the final report and notes from the field excursions. The necessary presumption for gaining the credit is an adequate activity during the field work.
