- Course objectives
- At the end of the course students should be able to characterize the main types of highly problematic and harmful chemicals, mainly those which are non-degradable or persistent, which have the ability to cumulate in abiotic and biotic compartments, broad range of toxic effects and which can be transported for long distances. Student will be able to describe the basic properties of these chemicals, occurrence, sources, long-range transport, toxicological and ecotoxicological properties. Student will be able to describe and discuss legislation and policy of these compounds and international convencies.
- Syllabus
- Environmental contamination – examples of pollutants – basic characteristics, sources, reaction and transport, toxicological and ecotoxicological effects – toxic metals, volatile organic compounds, detergents, phthalates, pesticides.
- Persistent organic pollutants – basic properties, occurrence, sources, long-range transport toxicological and ecotoxicological properties.
- International conventions.
- Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons.
- Phthalates.
- Halogenated organic compounds – polychlorinated benzenes, phenols and other monoaromatic compounds.
- Chlorinated pesticides.
- Polychlorinated biphenyls.
- Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins a dibenzofurans.
- Other types of halogenated aromatic compounds.
