Course objectives
The subject of the course is to acquaint students with the role of generalization in creating and deriving maps and with the current state of algorithmization in this area. The course covers the necessary basic procedures needed for map generalization. The lectures are followed by exercises in which the task will be assigned to implement selected procedures from the lecture. To implement the generalization procedures, a Javascript script using the Turf library will serve.
Learning outcomes
Students should be able:
  • to analyze the need for generalization for a defined extent of the cartographic representation with consideration of the target group, and various technology constraints
  • to identify and parameterize the appropriate algorithm to minimize conflicts within a cartographic presentation
  • to design and control the map generalization process
  • Syllabus
    • The course syllabus:
    • 1. Principles of the map generalization
    • 2. Conflicts triggering a map generalization
    • 3. Shape adjustments of line objects on maps
    • 4. A generalization of buildings
    • 5. An aggregation of map objects
    • 6. A collapse of map objects
    • 7. An exaggeration and caricature of map objects
    • 8. Displacements of map objects
    • 9. An identification of structures on maps
    • 10. Rules, constraints and an evaluation of generalization results
