- Abstract
- The practical course complements lectures in medical mycology and focuses on acquiring basic laboratory methods in this field. Students become familiar with microscopy, cultivation, and identification of clinically significant microscopic fungi (yeasts and filamentous fungi). The course also includes the application of diagnostic methods to students’ own samples and the interpretation of the obtained results.
- Learning outcomes
- Upon successful completion of the course, the student will be able to:
- work aseptically with microscopic fungi in a microbiology laboratory;
- prepare native and stained microscopic preparations and perform microscopic examination;
- isolate, cultivate, and identify clinically significant microscopic fungi;
- distinguish major groups of micromycetes (yeasts, Aspergillus, Mucorales, hyphomycetes, dermatophytes);
- perform the isolation of microscopic fungi from different types of samples;
- interpret laboratory results and evaluate the identification of unknown samples.
