Abstract

The course introduces students to the basic principles of environmental chemistry and the impacts of selected chemicals on the environment and human health. Attention is paid to the methodology of scientific research and the implementation of environmental studies.

The teaching takes place in the form of a weekly block exercise at the end of the semester. During this block, students practically master the complete course of the research process - from the formulation of a scientific hypothesis through sampling and laboratory analysis to the evaluation of data and the presentation of the obtained conclusions.

Learning outcomes

  • The student works in the laboratory using appropriate protective equipment.
  • The student processes the sample according to standard operating procedures.
  • The student applies the complete cycle of the research process in practice - from the formulation of the research question and hypothesis through sample collection to their laboratory processing and data interpretation.

Key topics

  • How to conduct a study (from initial idea to data interpretation).
  • How to work correctly and safely in environmental chemistry laboratories.
  • How to navigate and follow SOPs.
  • How to present scientific data.
  • Four selected studies focused on:
    • Air
    • Water
    • Soil
    • Indoor environment

Approaches, practices, and methods used in teaching
The course is delivered in an intensive weekly block and combines lectures, discussions, and practical work in the laboratory and data processing. The last day is dedicated to data evaluation and preparation of a presentation for the afternoon mini-conference (group work).
Method of verifying learning outcomes and course completion requirements
Credit will be awarded for active participation throughout the week and for a group presentation at the mini-conference.
Alternate completion
Due to block teaching and group work, it is not possible to schedule an alternative exercise date.
Language of instruction
Czech
Further Comments
