Abstract
This examination assesses students’ ability to use English in academic and professional contexts. Students present a specialised topic, discuss the relevance of a scientist based on source materials, and produce a short written text.
Learning outcomes
The exam assesses the student's ability to:
  • understand and interpret information from specialised written and spoken sources;
  • present and justify ideas on academic and science-related topics;
  • participate effectively in discussions and collaborative problem-solving;
  • express opinions, compare viewpoints, and respond appropriately to others;
  • produce clear, coherent written texts for academic and professional purposes.

Approaches, practices, and methods used in teaching
The examination involves presentation, reading, discussion and a short writing task.
Method of verifying learning outcomes and course completion requirements
  • A brief introduction of yourself and your field of study.
  • A presentation of an interesting topic related to your field, drawing on your home preparation (before the exam, you will submit a document containing a short summary of two sources you have studied).
  • Reading an article about a distinguished scientist provided by the examiner during the exam.
  • A discussion with other candidates about the relevance of this scientist and their work to the modern world.
  • A short written summary of the discussion or a promotional teaser for a presentation about the scientist (50 to 100 words).

Before enrolling in the JA001 exam, it is recommended to complete the CJV_DIAL course. The purpose of the CJV_DIAL course is to assess your level of English proficiency before registering for the English exams. However, if you know your language level and you are a first-year student, you only need to complete the ROPOTs in CJV_DIAL.
To prepare for the JA001 exam, register for the courses JA..01 (in the autumn semester) and JA..02 (in the spring semester). For more info, see https://cjv.sci.muni.cz/kurzy.
Attending these courses is not compulsory; however, it is strongly recommended as part of your preparation for the exam.
