Introduction
Dear participant,
Welcome to the BE-Learning course that has been designed for all those who would like to enhance their knowledge of workplace-specific vocabulary.
The course consists of eight units covering the most common areas of business that the majority of professionals encounter regularly. The aim of the course is to help learners acquire new vocabulary, and strengthen and extend their range of vocabulary through various activities based on reading and listening reception, and by completing interactive tasks.
The team of Business English language teachers at the Faculty of Economics and Administration would like to make your learning journey enjoyable. We are excited to have you aboard and look forward to seeing your progress.

How to work with the course
The reading activity summarises the main aspects of the topic and presents some of the most important vocabulary of the field. The expressions in bold are linked with their definitions, so if you move the cursor over the word, its definition will appear.
The listening activity offers an audio recording of a topic related to the unit and is designed in the form of an interactive task, mainly as a gap-filling exercise. You can always check your answers by clicking on the icon of the key you will see below.
The video activity looks at a different aspect of the topic and is usually in a drag-and-drop or a gap-filling exercise form.
Interactive activities – you will find a set of various activities using a range of online tools, such as Quizlet or Wordwall. These will allow you to practise the specific vocabulary and retain it more easily.
Each unit is accompanied by a set of PDF documents – the handout for the unit itself, a short glossary with the specific vocabulary, and the key to exercises.
Participants are welcome to explore any of the units randomly since there is not a specific order in which to follow the course. However, the authors have tried to make the sequence of topics logical, starting with the most common and most frequently needed workplace-specific vocabulary, moving on to more specific areas.
The authors would like to express their hope that the course will be of value to those who decide to follow it and we wish everyone good luck in their language studies.

Silvie Bilková
Silvie Bilková vyučuje odbornou angličtinu na Centru jazykového vzdělávání (MU). Zaměřuje se na tvořivý přístup k výuce s důrazem na rozvoj tvořivého a kritického myšlení. Přestože se v seminářích zabývá zejména ekonomickou angličtinou, snaží se zahrnovat i ukázky z oblasti kultury cílového jazyka, zejména filmů, hudby a kreslených seriálů. Protože mimo angličtiny vystudovala i matematiku, má blízko nejen k jazykovým ale i logickým hádankám a hlavolamům. Miluje večerníčky a ve volném čase si od výuky téměř dospělých odpočine při organizování zimních i letních táborových pobytů pro děti, které s nadšením přijmou skoro veškerou jí vymyšlenou aktivitu.
Silvie Bilková teaches professional English at the Language Centre (MU). She focuses on a creative approach to teaching with an emphasis on the development of creative and critical thinking. Although the seminars mainly deal with business English, she also tries to include samples from the culture of the target language, especially from movies, music and cartoon series. As in addition to English she studied mathematics, she enjoys solving not only language but also logical riddles and puzzles. She loves Večerníček (a TV program for children), and in her free time she takes a break from teaching almost adults by organizing winter and summer camps for children, who enthusiastically accept almost any activity she comes up with.
Jiřina Hrbáčková
Jiřina Hrbáčková je dlouhodobou členkou týmu vyučujících odbornou obchodní angličtinu na Ekonomicko-správní fakultě, kde spolu s každým novým ročníkem fascinovaně sleduje transformaci studentů – nováčků v sebevědomé a velmi dobře jazykově vybavené mladé lidi připravené na profesní život. Pro potřeby výuky ráda zpracovává autentické materiály a snaží se držet krok s rozvojem technologií. Vede kurzy prezentačních dovedností pro zahraniční studenty, a také díky nim teď pilně oprašuje své znalosti francouzštiny a španělštiny.
Jiřina Hrbáčková is a long-standing member of Business English language team at the Faculty of Economics and Administration, where she observes in awe the regular transformation of students – newcomers to confident and language-wise well-equipped young adults ready for their professional lives. In her teaching, she eagerly exploits authentic material, and tries to keep pace with the technological development as well. She started running a course of presentation skills for foreign students, thanks to whom she is now diligently brushing up on her French and Spanish.
Markéta Kovaříková
Markéta Kovaříková vyučuje odbornou angličtinu na Masarykově Univerzitě patnáctým rokem. Na výuce má ráda možnost setkávat se s novými lidmi, sdílet s nimi nápady a vyměňovat si názory, protože každý student přináší svůj vlastní příběh. Její motivací k práci je vidět pokrok a rozvoj dovedností studentů, kteří si učení jazyka užívají a považují jej za součást svého každodenního života. Markéta se považuje za průvodce, který pomáhá studentům nalézt cestu k tomu stát se samostatným uživatelem anglického jazyka. Ve své práci spojuje teorii s praxí, život ve třídě se skutečným světem, učení se s prožitkem, to vše na pozadí aktuálních témat a s využitím autentických materiálů i digitálních technologií. Na angličtině obdivuje pružnost, s jakou lze tento jazyk využít ke svému vyjádření a také její melodičnost a jemnost. K odpočinku Markéta upřednostňuje natolik praktické aktivity jako pečení, fotografování a horskou turistiku, jež jí umožňují dosáhnout rovnováhy mezi pracovním a osobním životem.
Markéta Kovaříková has been teaching professional English at the Masaryk University for fifteen years. What she likes about teaching is the opportunity to meet new people, share ideas, and discuss opinions as every student has a different story. Her motivation is to watch her students progress while enjoying learning and making it a part of their everyday lives. Marketa sees herself as a guide, helping students find their ways to independence as English users. She links theory to practice, classroom to the real world, and learning to experiencing by introducing current topics and exploiting authentic materials as well as technology. She indulges in the English language as its flexibility allows for countless ways of expressing oneself and it sounds so melodic and soft. To relax, Marketa appreciates such “hands and feet on” activities as baking, taking photographs and hiking, all of which brings her a sense of achievement and caters for her work-life balance.
Eva Punčochářová
Eva Punčochářová has been teaching Business English and Presentation skills at the Faculty of Economics and Administration, MU for more than fifteen years. She also teaches Czech to foreigners.
Eva Punčochářová vyučuje obchodní angličtinu a prezentační dovednosti na Ekonomicko-správní fakultě Masarykovy univerzity již více než patnáct let. Vedle toho také vyučuje češtinu jako cizí jazyk.
Erika Putnová
Eričina dlouholetá fascinace cizími jazyky vyústila do studia angličtiny a italštiny na FF MU v Brně. Už během studií získávala učitelskou ale i tlumočnicko-překladatelskou praxi a po ukončení studia vstoupila na dva roky do světa businessu v mezinárodních firmách, kde na obchodním oddělení zúročila svoje jazykové znalosti angličtiny, maďarštiny a italštiny. Dlouhá léta působila jako lektorka angličtiny a italštiny na státní jazykové škole v Brně, na FF MU připravovala studenty na přijímačky z italštiny a od roku 2018 učí v rámci CJV na ESF obchodní a ekonomickou angličtinu. Kromě studentů ESF, učí už několik let angličtinu pro personalisty a letos se vrátila i k italštině, kterou nabízí v kurzu i pro veřejnost. Kromě své práce, má ráda umění všeho druhu, přírodu, zahradu, běh, procházky a občas si uvaří podle italských receptů. Nejenže ráda učí, ale sama se ráda učí, a to i od studentů a v hodinách klade důraz na komunikaci a interaktivní aktivity.
Erika's long-time fascination with foreign languages led her to study English and Italian at the Faculty of Arts in Brno. During her studies she gained experience in teaching, interpreting and translating for international companies. After graduation, she entered the business world for two years in Belgian and Italian firms, where she used her language competences of English, Italian and Hungarian in the sales department. For many years she worked as an English and Italian lecturer at the state language school in Brno, at the Faculty of Arts of MU she prepared students for entrance exams in Italian and since 2018 she has been teaching business and economic English at the Faculty of Economics and Administration in Brno. Moreover, she has been teaching English for HR professionals for several years and this year she has opened an Italian course, which is offered to the public as well. Besides her work Erika enjoys art, nature, gardening, running, walking, and occasionally she likes to cook authentic Italian dishes based on Italian recipes. Not only does she love to teach, but she also loves to learn, learn from her students, and in her classes, she puts great emphasis on communication and interactive activities.
Petra Stejskalová
Petra Stejskalová vyučuje jako lektorka Centra jazykového vzdělávání na MU 15 let. Na Ekonomicko-správní fakultě se specializuje především na obchodní a ekonomickou angličtinu, ale věnuje se také výuce češtiny pro cizince. Ráda připravuje pro své studenty pestré a zábavné aktivity a vytváří na hodinách přátelskou atmosféru. Kromě výuky se zabývá jazykovým testováním. Pokud se právě nesnaží zodpovědět všechny všetečné otázky své pětileté dcery, hraje ve volném čase ráda deskové hry.
Petra Stejskalová has been teaching at Masaryk University Language Centre for 15 years. At the Faculty of Economics and Administration, she specializes primarily in business and economic English, but she also teaches Czech to foreign students. She enjoys preparing varied and fun activities for her students and creating a friendly atmosphere in her classes. In addition to teaching, she is involved in language testing. When she is not busy answering all the curious questions from her five-year-old daughter, she enjoys playing board games in her free time.
Ladislav Václavík
Mgr. Ladislav Václavík, Ph.D., je učitel obchodní angličtiny s vášní pro osvojování slovní zásoby a využití ICT nástrojů ve výuce jazyků. Má bohaté zkušenosti s vedením poutavých a efektivních kurzů pro studenty různých úrovní a odborností. Je jazykovým nadšencem, který překládá do češtiny romány a povídky z anglické, francouzské, a dokonce portugalské literatury. Ve volném čase se věnuje hře na klasickou kytaru, psaní beletrie a poezie a procházkám v přírodě. Rád také zkoumá průsečíky mezi psychologií, filozofií a kosmologií (pokud ho u toho zrovna neruší jeho kočka Margot).
Mgr. Ladislav Václavík, Ph.D., is a business English teacher with a passion for vocabulary acquisition and ICT tools in language teaching. He has extensive experience in delivering engaging and effective courses for learners of different levels and backgrounds. He is a language enthusiast who translates into Czech books from English, French, and even Portuguese literature. In his spare time, he likes to play classical guitar, write fiction and poetry, and walk outdoors. He also enjoys exploring the intersections of psychology, philosophy, and cosmology (if not interrupted by Margot, his cat).
