Subchapter list

Chapter intro

Prerequisites and corequisites:

  • Processes of renal elimination of drugs, evaluation of renal function, estimation of glomerular filtration rate
  • Definitions, causes, manifestations, diagnostic criteria (AKIN, RIFLE) of acute kidney injury (AKI)
  • Definition, causes, manifestations, diagnostic criteria, risk factors of chronic kidney disease (CKD)
  • Pharmacokinetic processes and parameters (bioavailability, volume of distribution, clearance, biological half-life…)

At first, try to answer the following questions or to find the answer:

  1. Which classifications do we use for AKI and which for CKD?
  2. How could the pharmacokinetics of drugs be affected in AKI? And how in CKD?
  3. Do you know any drugs that are eliminated exclusively by the kidneys?
  4. Do we always have to reduce the dosage of drugs in patients with impaired renal function?
  5. Do you know any nephrotoxic drugs?
  6. Do you know some procedures to prevent nephrotoxicity of drugs?
