Cíle předmětu
The aim of the course is to provide opportunities to students of International Relations and European Studies to enhance their reading, listening, writing and speaking skills in the context of current issues in their fields. Classes will mostly consist in students analysing and discussing news and journal articles and academic lectures. The discussion might also be initiated or supplemented by short extracts from English-speaking feature films. There will also be a writing component included in the course.

  • I/ The European Union and other institutions: contemporary challenges, the refugee crisis, neighbourhood policy, perceptions of security threats, the United Nations, NATO, regional institutions
  • II/ Key concepts in Security studies: War; Terrorism; Genocide and Crimes against Humanity; Climate Change and Environmental Security; Health; Intelligence
  • III/ Energy: different types of energy; seasonal variation in consumption of electricity; different socket formats; cables
  • IV/ Contemporary challenges in Security studies: the international arms trade; counterterrorism; transnational organized crime
