Cíle předmětu
The attending students will gain or develop: The ability to formulate critical review of a scientific manuscript. Skills necessary to formulate a sound reply to reviewer's comments. Orientation in the process of publishing a scientific paper. Overview of the potential issues, controversies and trends in the academic publishing
Osnova
  • • The course will be based on combination of individual and team-based hands-on experience with (mock) peer-review process, seminar-style discussions and talks by invited speakers regardging various aspects of academic publishing. The aspects we shall focus on include:
  • • Academic publication - building stones: scientific paper, peer-review, academic journals
  • • Peer-review in detail: rules for peer-review, hands-on experience
  • • Alternative publication channels: books, open-access, self-archiving
  • • Academic publication crisis and problems: confirmation bias, peer-review burden, financial aspects
  • • Effective result dissemination: choice of journal, keywords, title, abstract; highlighting results, spreading the word
  • • Differences in academic publishing between fields
Výukové metody
Individual and team-based work with scientific manuscript and peer-review texts, experience sharing, lectures, discussions, text study, homeworks, consultations
Metody hodnocení
The successful completion requires active participation in the course (including homework and presentation in the seminar), preparation of a review of a scientific paper and a reply to a review (texts in English language).
