Basic knowledge of Latin will facilitate the study of the subject and may be regarded as a useful component of the educational outfit of students when entering the faculty, though it is no obligatory prerequisite for the acquisition of the university subject matter in the introductory phase.

Cíle předmětu

Greek-Latin medical terminology is one of the relevant means for acquisition of the target knowledge of medical students. The tuition is of both theoretic and practical character, conceived as a preparatory course sui generis, introducing the students into the study of medicine by means of its language.
The content of tuition is, like the set of knowledge postulated in the examination, exclusively determined by the needs of the discipline and medical practice, with a particular focus on the head and neck regions. In the first place it provides such knowledge of Latin and/or Greek as enables the student to master quickly and purposefully the semantic aspect of terms, their grammatical form, and word-forming structure. Simultaneously it provides systematic instruction to independent solution of current terminological problems consisting in understanding of the technical content of the terms and in the formation of medical terms. Besides this it opens a view of the wider historical and linguistic fundamentals of medical terminology as well as its general theoretical contexts.

Výstupy z učení

At the end of the course students should be able to:
use Latin and Greek-Latin medical terminology and expressions correctly and understand them;
explain and apply grammatical devices and rules relevant for acquisition of Greek-Latin medical terminology;
recognize the syntactic structure of complex terms;
describe the semantic structure of one-word terms;
form compound words applying the most used word-formation principles;
translate selected expressions from anatomy, pre-clinical and clinical fields of study, medical prescriptions, and pharmacology;
guess the meanings of unknown terms on the basis of semantic, grammatical and logical relations.

• Basic medical terminology - practice. Syllabus.
• 1st week: Revision of the 1st semester´s curriculum with focus on the adjectives of 3rd declension.
• 2nd week: Comparison of adjectives. Dimminutive forms.
• 3rd week: Basic word-formation principles. Expressing position in medical terminology.
• 4th week: Numerals in clinical diagnose. Latin and Greek prefixes derived from prepositions.
• 5th week: Greek roots referring to anatomical structures and bodily liquids.
• 6th week: Progress test I. Greek roots referring to pathological states and diseases.
• 7th week: Greek roots referring to medical interventions and examinations.
• 8th week: Revision of compound words using Greek roots.
• 9th week: Progress test II. Specific pathological states and terms related to them.
• 10th week: Structure of Czech medical prescription. Most common formulae used in pharmacology.
• 11th week: Revision of medical prescriptions. Forms of medications.
• 12th week: Structure of a dissection protocol.
• 13th week: Final Revision.

Metody hodnocení

Requirements for gaining the credit: regular class attendance, active participation in class, preparation for classes, sitting progress tests and a credit test which is focused on word-formation, nominal inflexion being involved only marginally. The basic limit for passing all tests is 70% (the pass-mark for the credit test is lowered by 5% each time the progress test, which is obligatory, is successfully written, at most by 10%). Only one unexcused absence will be tolerated; further absences must be properly excused (i.e. via the Study Department of the Faculty of Medicine). Class attendance is registered through the IS.

Basic knowledge of Latin will facilitate the study of the subject and may be regarded as a useful component of the educational outfit of students when entering the faculty, though it is no obligatory prerequisite for the acquisition of the university subject matter in the introductory phase.

Cíle předmětu

Greek-Latin medical terminology is one of the relevant means for acquisition of the target knowledge of medical students. The tuition is of both theoretic and practical character, conceived as a preparatory course sui generis, introducing the students into the study of medicine by means of its language.
The content of tuition is, like the set of knowledge postulated in the examination, exclusively determined by the needs of the discipline and medical practice, with a particular focus on the head and neck regions. In the first place it provides such knowledge of Latin and/or Greek as enables the student to master quickly and purposefully the semantic aspect of terms, their grammatical form, and word-forming structure. Simultaneously it provides systematic instruction to independent solution of current terminological problems consisting in understanding of the technical content of the terms and in the formation of medical terms. Besides this it opens a view of the wider historical and linguistic fundamentals of medical terminology as well as its general theoretical contexts.

Výstupy z učení

At the end of the course students should be able to:
use Latin and Greek-Latin medical terminology and expressions correctly and understand them;
explain and apply grammatical devices and rules relevant for acquisition of Greek-Latin medical terminology;
recognize the syntactic structure of complex terms;
describe the semantic structure of one-word terms;
form compound words applying the most used word-formation principles;
translate selected expressions from anatomy, pre-clinical and clinical fields of study, medical prescriptions, and pharmacology;
guess the meanings of unknown terms on the basis of semantic, grammatical and logical relations.

• Basic medical terminology - practice. Syllabus.
• 1st week: Revision of the 1st semester´s curriculum with focus on the adjectives of 3rd declension.
• 2nd week: Comparison of adjectives. Dimminutive forms.
• 3rd week: Basic word-formation principles. Expressing position in medical terminology.
• 4th week: Numerals in clinical diagnose. Latin and Greek prefixes derived from prepositions.
• 5th week: Greek roots referring to anatomical structures and bodily liquids.
• 6th week: Progress test I. Greek roots referring to pathological states and diseases.
• 7th week: Greek roots referring to medical interventions and examinations.
• 8th week: Revision of compound words using Greek roots.
• 9th week: Progress test II. Specific pathological states and terms related to them.
• 10th week: Structure of Czech medical prescription. Most common formulae used in pharmacology.
• 11th week: Revision of medical prescriptions. Forms of medications.
• 12th week: Structure of a dissection protocol.
• 13th week: Final Revision.

Metody hodnocení

Requirements for gaining the credit: regular class attendance, active participation in class, preparation for classes, sitting progress tests and a credit test which is focused on word-formation, nominal inflexion being involved only marginally. The basic limit for passing all tests is 70% (the pass-mark for the credit test is lowered by 5% each time the progress test, which is obligatory, is successfully written, at most by 10%). Only one unexcused absence will be tolerated; further absences must be properly excused (i.e. via the Study Department of the Faculty of Medicine). Class attendance is registered through the IS.

Cíle předmětu

Obecná charakteristika předmětu: Řecko-latinská lékařská terminologie je jedním z relevantních prostředků získání cílových vědomostí medika. Výuka má teoreticko-praktický ráz a je koncipována jako propedeutický kurs sui generis, uvádějící posluchače do studia medicíny prostřednictvím jejího jazyka.
Obsah výuky je stejně jako soubor znalostí postulovaných u zkoušky určován výlučně potřebami oboru a lékařské praxe, se zvláštním zřetelem na oblasti hlavy a krku. Především zprostředkuje ty znalosti latiny, příp. řečtiny, které umožní studentovi rychle a účelně zvládnout významovou stránku termínů, jejich gramatickou podobu a slovotvornou strukturu. Současně poskytuje systematický návod k samostatnému řešení běžných terminologických problémů spočívajících v porozumění odborným obsahům a v tvorbě lékařských pojmů. Kromě toho otevírá pohled na širší historické a lingvistické základy lékařské terminologie i její všeobecné teoretické souvislosti.
Výstupy z učení:
Na konci tohoto kurzu bude student schopen:
používat latinskou a řecko-latinskou lékařskou terminologii jazykově korektně a s pochopením významu jednotlivých termínů;
vysvětlit a aplikovat gramatické prostředky a pravidla relevantní pro osvojení řecko-latinské lékařské terminologie;
rozpoznat syntaktickou strukturu víceslovných termínů;
popsat sémantickou stavbu jednoslovných termínů;
vytvářet odvozená a složená slova pomocí nejčastěji užívaných slovotvorných prostředků;
překládat vybrané výrazy z anatomie, preklinických a klinických disciplín, recepturního souboru a farmakologie;
odhadnout význam neznámých termínů na základě sémantických, gramatických a logických souvislostí.

• ZÁKLADY LÉKAŘSKÉ TERMINOLOGIE - seminář. Rozpis výuky.
• 1. týden: Užití adjektiv III. deklinace v klinické terminologii a v terminologii lékařských zpráv. Frekventovaná vztahová adjektiva na -alis,e a -aris, e; užití particípií na -ans a -ens.
• 2. týden: Anatomické struktury obsahující v názvech pravidelně tvořené komparativy a superlativy.
• 3. týden: Anatomické struktury obsahující v názvech nepravidelně a neúplně tvořené komparativy a superlativy, vyjádření polohy a směru v anatomii pomocí komparativů a superlativů.
• 4. týden: Základní a řadové číslovky v anatomické, klinické a farmakologické terminologii. Ukázky různých typů receptů.
• 5. týden: Doplňkový materiál k terminologii fraktur a nejčastějších úrazů.
• 6. týden: Průběžný test I. Úvod do slovotvorby I. - základní zákonitosti derivace. Latinské a řecké prefixy, jejich významy a vzájemné vztahy.
• 7. týden: Úvod do slovotvorby II. - latinské a řecké substantivní a adjektivní sufixy, jejich významy a vzájemné vztahy. Synonymie, antonymie, polysémie a homonymie předpon a přípon.
• 8. týden: Průběžný test II. Úvod do slovotvorby III. - základní pravidla kompozice, spojovací morfémy. Latinská a řecká složená slova, hybridní slova. Latinská kompozita v anatomické nomenklatuře.
• 9. týden: Úvod do slovotvorby IV. Příklady autentické dokumentace obsahující slovotvorné komponenty označující všeobecné termíny, názvy anatomických struktur a tělních tekutin.
• 10. týden: Úvod do slovotvorby V. Příklady autentické dokumentace obsahující slovotvorné komponenty označující fyziologické a patologické jevy a procesy probíhající v lidském těle, řecké slovotvorné komponenty pro různé vlastnosti, charakteristiky a množství.
• 11. týden: Úvod do slovotvorby VI. Příklady autentické dokumentace obsahující slovotvorné komponenty označující jednotlivé lékařské obory, nejčastější typy lékařských zákroků a vyšetření.
• 12. týden: Klinicko-anatomická pitevní diagnóza jako příklad autentického použití latiny v lékařské praxi.
• 13. týden: Opakování, doplňování a procvičování učiva.
• 14. týden: Klauzurní test.

Metody hodnocení

Požadavky pro získání zápočtu: pravidelná docházka, aktivní účast ve výuce, průběžná příprava, absolvování kontrolního testování a klauzurního testu, jenž je zaměřen na slovotvorbu, jen okrajově se týká jmenné flexe. Základní hranici u všech testů představuje dosažení min. 70 % úspěšnosti (hranice klauzurního testu je však možné snížiť o 5 nebo 10%, pokud student uspěje v jednom nebo v obou průběžných testech, které jsou povinné.) Povolena je pouze jedna neomluvená absence, každá další musí být řádně omluvena (prostřednictvím Studijního oddělení LF). Docházka je vedena přes IS.

Metody hodnocení

Requirements for gaining the credit: regular class attendance, active participation in class, preparation for classes, sitting progress tests and a credit test which is focused on word-formation, nominal inflexion being involved only marginally. The basic limit for passing all tests is 70% (the pass-mark for the credit test is lowered by 5% each time the progress test, which is obligatory, is successfully written, at most by 10%). Only one unexcused absence will be tolerated; further absences must be properly excused (i.e. via the Study Department of the Faculty of Medicine). Class attendance is registered through the IS.
