Anotace
The aim of the course is to raise the student's awareness of problems a Czech student (and future teacher) of English can have in the area of individual sounds.Potential problems are identified and intesively dealt with in the form of school and home drills based on printed worksheets. An integral part of the course is individual home practice and individual work with the student during specialised consultations.
The notion of phoneme is introduced and the phonetic alphabet presented and further practised in phonemic transcriptions which are checked and commented on thoroughly at the beginning of each lesson with special regard to the acoustic differences of sounds existing in both languages.
This course raises students’ awareness of similarities and differences between English and their mother tongue and thus enables them to identify potentially problematic areas for their future learners.

Credit requirements:
  • Active participation in class (together with consistent home practice)
  • Students are expected to arrive to class on time and bring their own copy of the study materials. Failure to do so may result in their attendance not being counted towards meeting the minimum requirement.
  • Taking a midterm transcription test in class
  • Completing Moodlinka quizzes (passmark 70%)
  • Pass the final credit test (passmark 70%)
  • Pass a one-to-one consultation (passmark 70%)
  • To successfully pass the course, students must complete a portfolio task. COMBINED STUDY GROUPS: Portfolio task = designing a pronunciation game. According to Competency Framework for Teacher Graduates (OSKR/KRAAU), creation of this portfolio task develops competence in didactically transforming complex subject content into appropriate teaching materials and learning opportunities that correspond to the cognitive level and educational needs of elementary school pupils.
  • Náhradní absolvování
The course takes place in the first semester of the study programme, which is too early for students to go for an Erasmus+ stay; for that reason this course does not have an alternative syllabus and requirements.
