Cíle předmětu
The aim of this lecture is to build a necessary foundation for the study of phonetics and phonology of English in the summer semester by getting the students acquainted with the essentials of general phonetics. In order to achieve this, the general IPA chart will be introduced and commented on with the main purpose being to see which articulatory organs are used in the production of different kinds of sounds in different languages of the world, including exotic sounds, such as clicks and some diacritics. In connection with all this, the anatomy of the human articulatory apparatus will be presented and a good deal of laboratory work done, during which students will be able to "try out" various sounds and "explore" their own articulatory "equipment"for themselves.Simultaneously, some guided phonemic transcription training will be offered to give the students a chance to see the specificity of the English phonological system, which will be covered thorougly in the summer semester.
