Course objectives
The course contributes to basic orientation in the pedagogical and psychological terminology considering the historical context. It is the foundation for further studies in the field of pedagogy and psychology. The lecturers from the Department of Education and the Department of Psychology will alternate in the two-hour lessons and seminars. The aim of the course is to provide the students with the knowledge of the basic pedagogical concepts as well as the philosophical and historical origins of pedagogy, general psychology and the psychology of personality.
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course student should be able to :
Know the basic pedagogical and psychological concepts, understand them and be able to use them adequately.
Understand the principles of the legacy of selected pedagogical thinkers.
Read and understand pedagogical texts.
Distinguish the difference between scientific and popular pedagogy and psychology knowledge.

  • Lecture syllabus: 1. Pedagogy as a field of science. 2. Antique and Medieval Educatin. 3. Modern pedagogical thinkers. 4. Pedagogical reformism and the beginning of alternative schools at the turn of 19th and 20th century. 5. Teacher and his profession; pupil at school. 6. Educational system in the Czech Republic; The structure of school system; Curicular documents. 7. The subject of psychology and its development; Psyche conditionality; Awareness; Perceieving; Perception. 8. Attention; Memory; Imagination; Thinking; Problem solving. 9. Thinking and speech; Intelligence; Skills; Creativity. 10. Learning; Learning outcomes; Learning styles; Emotions. 11. Personality - concept; definition; structure and dynamics; motivation; needs. 12. Stress, Stress factors; Burn-out syndrome; Psychohygiene; Will and volitional processes; Decision making. Seminar syllabus: • Mutual introduction; students´expectations and needs • Pedagogy as a field of science – interactive work with a research text • Psychology as a field of science – a comparison of a popular and scientific text; characteristics of a scientific text • Understanding of basic categories and terms • Personality and upbringing (inspiration by construct of temperament), reflecting students´ experiences. • Education in historical perspective – prehistory; antics – Socratic dialogue; Medieval times – septem artes liberales • Pedagogical issues of Modern times – J. A. Komenský, J. Locke, J. J. Rousseau, J. H. Pestalotzzi, J. F. Herbart, F. Frobel – reading of selected texts • The development of the concept of a child from 19th century • Teacher – his profession, Identity and development – confrontation with the research result • Historical milestones of the Czech pedagogy development • Familiarization with basic curicular documents • Teacher´s self-reflection (primary student teacher´s self-reflection) – reflection of the educational process and the teacher´s position in it
