Anotace

We live in an interconnected world. Global, national, regional and even local cultures do not exist in mutual isolation but, rather, shape each other. At the same time, international cultural trends are given a national character, while regional and local cultures make use of universal ideas and practices. As a result, we live in a mixed, hybrid world – the “local in the global”. This course examines this issue as it relates to visual culture since 1900. How do different communities react to the challenges of globalisation and internationalisation? Do their visual cultures isolate itself to emphasise difference and exceptionalism, or is globalisation a creative impetus? The course focuses on selected case studies that interrogate how communities, via their artists, designers and architects, have exploited this intersection of the local and the global in productive ways. The course also pays attention to the practices of museums and galleries that address the topic of regional art in their exhibitions and displays.


The objective of the course is to explore and understand the ways in which local, national, regional and global practices in visual culture interact, and to provide students with the understanding of relevant concepts and methods for analysing them.

On successful completion of the course, students should be able to:


·         Demonstrate a critical knowledge and understanding of the relationship between concepts of the local, the national and the global in visual culture


·         Demonstrate a critical knowledge and understanding of the historic and current debates, concepts and methods used to interpret the interaction of the local and the global


·         Identify and analyse selected examples of the “local in the global” in visual culture since 1900 in the light of the concepts, debates and methods discussed in the course


·         Exhibit advanced oral and presentation skills applicable at international conferences

Přístupy, postupy a metody používané ve výuce

The course will be based on a combination of lectures, seminar group discussion of case studies, and final student presentations in the form of a mini conference. 

Způsob ověření výstupů z učení a požadavky na ukončení

In order to gain credit for the course, students are required to prepare a conference-type presentation of 20 minutes on an agreed topic. The final student conference will be preceded by a response to call for papers published during the course. The student presentation should be related to the lecture series thematically and methodologically, but it should not use the same examples as those discussed in the lectures. It should be based on original research and needs to be accompanied by bibliography of sources used. The use of AI beyond linguistic assistance is not permitted.
