Cíle předmětu
The lectures will present propaganda practices used by both sides of the WWII conflict.
Výstupy z učení
The lectures offer an introduction to the sometimes parallel but often contrasting ways in which Nazi Germany and the USA used the film medium during the Second World War. In effect, the students will get insights into the way film medium was used for propaganda purposes in the period of WWII.

  • Introductory class 1: Film production and propaganda in Nazi Germany (1933-1945) This session is illustrated with examples (clips) from fiction films, documentaries, newsreels. For instance: - Deutsche Wochenschau - Der ewige Jude - Münchausen - Triumph des Willens - Jud Süss - Auf wiedersehen, Franziska Introductory class 2: Film production and propaganda in the USA (1934-1945) This session is illustrated with examples (clips) from fiction films, documentaries, newsreels. For instance: - Hitler’s Reign of Terror (1934) - Confessions of a Nazi Spy (1939) - The Great Dictator (1940) - Man Hunt (1941) - To be or not to be (1942) - Why we Fight series Class 3 and 4: “All is fair in Love and war”: “Casablanca” (1942) versus “Die grosse Liebe” (1942) This session starts with a lecture of approx. 60 minutes, comparing the story lines and production histories of two romantic films that came out in the same year: “Casablanca” (102 minutes) and “Die grosse Liebe” (100 minutes). Class 5: “Ohm Krüger” and the difficulty of exporting propaganda Class 6: Animation This last session discusses animation films. This includes German anti-Semitic films but also quite funny examples from wartime propaganda cartoons made by Disney and by Chuck Jones

Written test and a test checking knowledge of required reading (the essays will be uploaded to the "study material" file till the end of October).
