Course objectives
This introductory course is for the students who begin to study musicology. It introduces them to the basic scientific terminology (definitions, classification of science, Kuhns theory of scientific paradigms) as well as to the specific musicological problems (classification of musicological disciplines, historical and systematic musicology etc.). The students also learn about the history of musicology ( the cognitive reflexion before the beginning of modern musicology, short history of musicological disciplines etc.) and the main research schools (Czech lands, other countries). Special interest is paid to the works of Czech musicologists.
Learning outcomes
The student will acquire basic knowledge of musicology as a scientific field (basic scientific terminology, definitions, classification of science, Kuhns theory of scientific paradigms, classification of musicological disciplines, historical and systematic musicology, history of musicology, the cognitive reflexion before the beginning of modern musicology, short history of musicological disciplines, the main research schools /Czech lands, other countries/, works of Czech musicologists).

  • The individual lessons will be devoted to the methodological, systematic and historical questions of musicological science as a scientific field.
