Cíle předmětu
This course introduces sociolinguistics through an exploration of how the Japanese language is used in society, both within Japan and abroad. After a brief overview of the foundations and development of the sociolinguistic field, we will examine major issues and findings to shed light on intriguing aspects of Japanese in social contexts. Topics will include speaker variables (age, sex and gender, social class), dialects and language attitudes, loanwords, language land/soundscape. By the end of the course, students will have acquired key concepts and analytical perspectives in Japanese sociolinguistics.
Výstupy z učení
After completing the course, a student will be able to:
– characterize sociolinguistic approaches to the study of a language;
– give examples of factors that cause a variability in a language;
– present a basic characteristics of the honorifics in Japanese;
– describe the most important points in Japanese language policy.

  • Class 1: Introduction: what is sociolinguistics?
  • Class 2: Speaker’s variable (age)
  • Class 3: Speaker’s variable (sex and gender, social class)
  • Class 4: Honorifics, Politeness, and Taigū Hyōgen

  • Class 6: Language contact (loanwords, code-switching and pidgin/creole)
  • Class 7: Language contact (multilingualism)
  • Class 8: Language policy (standard Japanese, Chinese character, multi-language services)
