Osnova
  • The 15th century represents a flowering period for the art of the book, in which the invention of print raised the production into unprecedented heights in order to meet the needs of an increasingly literate society. Although it was the century of the Hussite wars followed by a dispute over the Bohemian crown for Eastern Austria and its neighbors Hungary and Moravia, the production of artistically valuable books was not disrupted in the region of today’s Upper and Lower Austria. On the contrary: The intimate and mobile medium “book”, illuminated for nobility, church and scholarly circles, reflects interests and relationships across borders. The exercise provides an opportunity to gain a first overview of this eventful era through the study of manuscripts and incunabula. Furthermore, it surveys important works by means of exemplary case studies and introduces basic knowledge of terminology as well as of the craft of book illumination as such.
