Cíle předmětu
This is an introductory course in research methods. We will focus on research in the field of English language teaching (ELT) and applied linguistics. The students will become familiar with the specific forms of such research and its realization. The focus will be on general assumptions in qualitative and quantitative research as well as on particular processes and considerations in selected qualitative and quantitative research traditions.
Výstupy z učení
The students will be able to select and use appropriate methods of data collection and procedures of data analysis. The students will be able to analyse published research reports and will be aware of ethical considerations in research in educational settings.
Osnova
  • Introduction. Qualitative vs. quantitative research in applied linguistics. Qualitative research traditions (I): Ethnomethodology and Conversation analysis in ELT. Data collection, transcription and analysis. Qualitative research traditions (II): Interviews and the Grounded Theory in ELT. Preparation and conduct of an interview, analysis of transcripts. Analysis of qualitative research reports: structure, ways of presenting findings. Quantitative research traditions (I): Survey research in ELT. Construction, administration and analysis of questionnaires. Introduction to descriptive statistics. Presentation of findings in quantitative studies, IMRaD structure of research reports. Quantitative research traditions (II): Experimental research in ELT. Considerations and possibilities, introduction to inferential statistics. Considerations in qualitative and quantitative research designs: Selection of methods of data collection and analysis for various types of problems in ELT, sampling issues. Ethics in research in educational settings. Quality of research (validity, reliability, trustworthiness, etc.).

Metody hodnocení
Active participation in classes. The UZAJ9519 (full-time students’) course can be finished with credit or examination. To get credit, students have to submit Assignment 1. The examination is written and the students can take the test only if their Assignment 1 is accepted.
